Network Troubleshooting
Network problems will result in intermittent unexplained system errors that may corrupt data and make ProfitSystem un-useable.
ProfitSystem requires a minimum of 100mb Ethernet LAN speed. in computer Peer to Peer configurations. Wireless networks are not fast enough or reliable enough for proper ProfitSystem operation in Peer to Peer topologies. Other types of configurations or NON Peer to Peer setups may support other network configurations, like terminal services or 'thin client' computing.
Network Failure Troubleshooting
1) Check/test your hard disk to see if it is operating properly before trouble shooting the LAN network. You can purchase hard disk diagnostic programs (when you hardware vendor does not supply them) to test for problems. 2) Copy a large file from (500mb+) from one folder to another (not on server) from a client PC (not server where file is located) If the system fails continue Network trouble shooting. Test changes to cables/cards with this large file transfer test. 3) Wireless networks will not work satisfactorily with peer to peer 4) Check cable for proper type. Insure it is rated for 100mb/Gigabit Ethernet speed 5) Check cable lengths from switch (cannot exceed 100 meters) 6) Check location of cables, insure they are not close to items that will cause electrical interference like electrical motors for heat/ac equipment and the like. 7) Check Switch/Hub to make sure it is 100mb/Gigabit rated 8) Check network cards for proper operation (best method is to swap card for brand new one)
Problems connecting from workstation to server
- Insure that SMB 1 is enabled on the workstation and server via Windows Features
- Turn off password protected sharing on the server. Go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings and under All Networks select Turn off password protected sharing.
- Check for third-party firewalls or anti-virus on the server or workstation that may be blocking network access and turn off
- Turn off Windows firewall on workstation and server. If that fixes it, add exceptions for windows file sharing or leave turned off
- On the server, change the windows password used to logon to windows and then change it back to the correct password
- On the server, confirm the C:\programdata\ProfitSystem folder is shared with a share name of ProfitSystem, and the sharing permission is set to for Everyone to Full Control
- On the server, confirm that the Windows folder permissions for C:\programdata\ProfitSystem are set to Full Control for Everyone
- On the workstation, try to connect to the server from a command prompt NET USE \[SERVER]\ProfitSystem /user:[server logon name] [server password]
- On the workstation, check the Windows networking log Event Viewer->Application and Services Logs->Microsoft->Windows->SMB Client
- On the server, check the Windows networking log Event Viewer->Application and Services Logs->Microsoft->Windows->SMB Server
